My ADO Rantings -

Having been around many dart throwers in many venues I realize there are many of you who do not care at all about the American Dart Organization (ADO) and the local throwers who compete at that level.  The Board will be increasing the membership dues in January by $4.  The extra cost is NOT for the ADO.  The extra money goes to the League and ensures the SCUDL has members for the full calendar year.  Some have said they will not throw next season because of the increase of $4. As we all have noticed, costs have gone up everywhere and darts is no different.

Getting back to the ADO and those who compete or do not compete.  I throw League play on Tuesdays and I also throw in the local ADO qualifiers. I have had the chance to get to know some GREAT darters by competing at this level.  I know that I, as well as others, have bragged on some of our local SCUDL players and the level of competition they are playing at the local, regional and national level.  The SCUDL is lucky enough to  have 4 local throwers, that I know of, go to compete at the National level.  We have Brian Bemis, Jeff Turner, Amy Tucker and Sandy Hudson.

I have heard local throwers fussing about the money it takes to send these SCUDL players.  The SCUDL does not pay for the darters to move on from the Regional level to the National level.  The SCUDL just pays for the local qualifiers and sends darters to the Regionals.  When these players qualify THEY pay for the hotel, meals and travel.  The league pays entry fee only.  Some of the money comes from the SCUDL but most comes from the local players who compete. From the Regional Level if one of our throwers makes it to the Nationals the Regional ADO pays the costs.  The players do get lodging and some money for meals but I know for a fact the amounts DO NOT cover their expenses when they go to compete.  The local throwers use their money to travel and compete.  They are paying to represent our Region and the SCUDL.

It really bothers me when I hear local SCUDL throwers whine about the ADO and if dues are (and they are not) raised to support these throwers.  We are all members of a League.  We are a group that enjoys throwing darts on Tuesdays and the camaraderie that comes with it.  Part of that group wants to compete at a higher level. We as a group should be supportive of that. I know not everyone cares - but how huge is it that we have Sandy Hudson going to represent our region and our League in England.  She is going to be competing against the best IN THE WORLD and guess what - she is one of them.  I think that is UNBELIEVABLE and she makes me so proud to know she is representing the SCUDL, our Region and the United States. I hope everyone realizes that Sandy will be paying out of her pocket many of the expenses she will incur on her travels to represent us.  If you don't agree with the ADO and you do not want to support it, that is fine, but please do not disrespect those who do.  I would think as a group we can be supportive in any way of our local throwers who compete so well and represent us so well.
